A children's book club meeting to discuss Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, complete with a related craft activity and snacks.
The Mission Valley Kids Book and Craft Club meets at the Mission Valley Branch Library on Tuesday, October 13, from 4 PM to 5:15 PM. This month they're diving into Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, so if your kid has been wanting to start the series, this is a great way to get them into it. The session is built around three things: talking through the book, working on a related craft, and eating snacks. There's also a free copy of the book offered, which is a nice touch if you don't already have one on the shelf.
It's a recurring thing—the club runs on the second Tuesday of every month—and it's recommended for readers aged 8 to 11. That puts it right in the sweet spot for kids who've moved past early readers but aren't quite in middle school yet, and since it's a group, it turns reading into something social rather than a solo activity. The craft gives them something to take home, and the snacks keep the energy up while they talk about what they've read.
As for the venue, the Mission Valley Branch Library is one of thirty-five branches in the San Diego Public Library system. The building itself is something of a local landmark—it opened in July 2002 and won an Orchid Award from the San Diego Chapter of the American Institute of Architects for "Best Institutional Design" and "Best Divine Details," a nod to the lighted tree columns that double as sculptures. Inside, it's a full-service branch with a children's library, a computer lab, a mezzanine, and a terrace, plus an outdoor patio with a children's garden and a flowing river sculpture. The club meets in the community room, which is plenty of space for a group of kids to spread out their crafts.

It's free to attend, and since it's a regular monthly thing, you can make it a habit rather than a one-off. The session runs from 4 PM to 5:15 PM on Tuesday, October 13, at the Mission Valley Branch Library, 2123 Fenton Pkwy., San Diego, CA 92108.
