A student-led STEM club run by Patrick Henry High School students, offering hands-on science and math presentations for elementary and middle school students.
The Junior Innovators STEM Club is back at the San Carlos Branch Library on Tuesday, October 20, from 4 PM to 5 PM. It's part of a recurring series that meets on the third Tuesday of each month, so if you miss this one, there's another coming up soon. The club is aimed at elementary and middle school students, which makes it a good fit for families with kids in that age range.
The whole thing is run by the Patrick Henry High School Junior Innovators Club, a student-led STEM group. They're the ones who bring the hands-on science and math presentations and projects to the library, so the sessions are led by high schoolers rather than adults. That's a nice part of the setup: older students teaching younger ones, and the kids get to see people not much older than themselves working with the same subjects they're learning in school.
Since it's a hands-on club, the focus is on doing rather than just listening. The high schoolers lead the presentations and the projects, so the kids spend the hour actually working with the materials. It's a good way to get a taste of science and math outside of a classroom setting, and because it's run by students, it tends to feel more like a club than a lesson.

All the materials are funded by the San Carlos Friends of the Library, the volunteer group that supports the branch's wider youth programming. The session runs from 4 PM to 5 PM at the San Carlos Branch Library, 7265 Jackson Dr, San Diego, CA 92119. It's open to elementary and middle school students, and it happens on the third Tuesday of each month.
