Award-winning performer Carisa Hendrix stars as Lucy Darling in the solo show As You Wish, blending improvisational comedy and magic.
Carisa Hendrix brings her solo show As You Wish to the Balboa Theatre on Monday, October 12, performing under her stage persona, Lucy Darling. It's a one-woman show that blends improvisational comedy, witty writing, and magic, following Darling's "vivacious vagabond voyages."
If the name doesn't ring a bell, the persona should. Lucy Darling is a charming socialite and cocktail enthusiast who carries her brand of charm and mischief from screen to stage. She's billed as the "Mistress of Magic," and the resume behind the character is substantial: a 15-time award-winning entertainer featured in the Guinness Book of World Records and Ripley's Believe It or Not, winner of the 2019 Allan Slaight Award, and two-time Magic Castle Stage Magician of the Year. As You Wish is a new touring show, so this is one of the stops on its current run.
On the night, Hendrix handles everything herself—the comedy, the writing, and the magic—all while staying in character as Darling. The improvisational side means the show can shift depending on the room, so no two performances are exactly the same. It's a solo act in every sense, with one person carrying the whole thing from start to finish.
