A family-centered gathering honoring Mictlan, the Aztec underworld, with art, music and an altar contest.
Festival Mictlan comes to Latine Pride at Liberty Station Central Promenade on Saturday, October 24, from 2 PM to 7 PM. It's presented by Latin@x Services at The San Diego LGBT Community Center, and it's a family-centered gathering that honors Mictlan, the underworld of Mexica tradition—the sacred destination where souls journey and return on DĂa de los Muertos.
The day is built around art, music, and collective joy, blending old traditions with new memories. Throughout the festival, you'll find altars built as offerings of memory and love displayed across the space. The music comes from a community choir, Ecos del Mictlán, which has been forming around the occasion. They'll perform an original arrangement of La Llorona y La Bruja alongside Tijuana Queer Coral, Coro Meraki, and singers from across San Diego.
One detail that stands out is how the choir came together: rehearsals were held fully bilingually, so knowing Spanish wasn't a requirement to join in. That open approach fits the whole afternoon—a mix of traditional Mexica roots and a broad community coming together to mark the season.
