Soul and R&B artist Danielle Ponder performs live with her backing band at the Voodoo Room.
Danielle Ponder plays the Voodoo Room at the House of Blues in San Diego on Thursday, March 4, 2027. She'll be backed by a full band — drums, guitar, and keyboard, with Avis Reese on the keys — so it's a full-band set rather than a solo affair.
Ponder is a soul and R&B artist from Rochester, New York. Her debut album, Some of Us Are Brave, earned a Grammy nomination, and she's built her reputation around a voice that's clear and carries a slight, haunting edge. Between songs, she often weaves in the stories behind the music, so you get a sense of where the songs are coming from rather than just a string of tracks. NPR's All Songs Considered described her sound as "the perfect voice of a movement: anthemic while compassionate; soulful while bold and strong," and noted a "goose bump-inducing passion" in her performance.
One thing to keep in mind if you've seen her before, or if you're wondering how she closes: she often ends her shows with an encore of Radiohead's "Creep," which is a far cry from the soul and R&B that makes up the rest of her set. It's a cover that's become a bit of a signature for her live shows.
