Concert by AJ Lee & Blue Summit, a bluegrass band that fuses country, soul, swing, rock and jam music.
AJ Lee & Blue Summit play Casbah on Saturday, October 10, with the show starting at 8 PM. They're a Bay Area band, though they've played all over the world, and this is one of their San Diego dates.
If you haven't caught them before, the sound is bluegrass at its center, but they pull from a few other places. They describe it as country, soul, swing, rock and jam music all seen through a bluegrass lens. That's a wide net, and it shows in the lineup: Sullivan Tuttle and Scott Gates both play steel-string acoustic guitars, AJ Lee takes the mandolin and the vocals, Jan Purat is on fiddle, and Chad Bowen holds it down on upright bass. It's a full acoustic ensemble, so there's plenty of string work to keep track of.
They've put out two full-length albums so far. The first, Like I Used To, came out in 2019, and they followed it up with I'll Come Back in August 2021. Between those two, you've got the bulk of what they've recorded, and they'll be drawing from both for the set. The songs lean on that bluegrass foundation, but the soul and country influences are what pull them away from a traditional sound.
