The University of Utah Wind Ensemble, with the A Capella choir and faculty soloists Kirstin Chavez and James Bobick, performs works by Brahms, Mahler, Erik Santos and Anna Clyne.
The University of Utah Wind Ensemble performs Voices at Libby Gardner Concert Hall on Tuesday, October 27, from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM. The program is titled Voices, and the title fits what's on stage: the ensemble is joined by the A Capella choir and faculty soloists Kirstin Chavez and James Bobick. It's a full evening of wind and brass, voices, and soloists all sharing the same bill.
The music spans a wide range of eras. On one end are the big names from the late 19th and early 20th centuries: Johannes Brahms and Gustav Mahler. Both are staples of the wind band repertoire, and hearing them alongside a choir and soloists brings out the vocal quality that their writing often points toward. On the other end are newer works by Erik Santos and Anna Clyne, so the program moves from the standard classics to music written much closer to our own time.
Having the A Capella choir and soloists on stage changes the dynamic from a typical wind ensemble concert. Instead of just the instruments, you'll have voices woven into the arrangements, and the soloists Chavez and Bobick step out from the ensemble to lead specific pieces. It's a good mix of a large group sound and more intimate moments.
