University chamber orchestra led by Dr. Brandon Derfler plays 'From Fate To Freedom', with works by Verdi, Wagner and Beethoven's 5th Symphony.
The Westminster Chamber Orchestra is back at the Vieve Gore Concert Hall on Wednesday, November 4, with a program they've titled From Fate To Freedom. It's their second performance of the academic year, and the bill is built around some of the most recognizable names in the classical canon: Verdi, Wagner, and Beethoven's 5th Symphony.
That Beethoven piece is the one everyone knows — the four-note opening that's become shorthand for fate knocking at the door. It's a heavy lift for any orchestra, and it's the anchor of the night. The Verdi and Wagner pieces round it out, so you're getting three different traditions on one stage. Dr. Brandon Derfler is conducting, and the whole thing runs from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM.
If you haven't seen them before, here's a bit of context: the Westminster Chamber Orchestra performs every semester at the Vieve Gore Concert Hall, and their repertoire changes from one term to the next, running from baroque concertos to contemporary masterpieces. It's not just a student group, either — the ensemble is open to Westminster University students, faculty, staff, and community members, who audition each semester. That means you'll find a mix of students and local musicians on the stage together.

The university frames its performing arts programs as a cultural connection between its students and the Sugar House community, and this concert is part of that. It's one of several ensembles they host throughout the year, alongside the Westminster Concert Series, which brings professional musicians to Salt Lake City in everything from chamber singers to jazz groups and an opera studio. The Vieve Gore Concert Hall is inside the Emma Eccles Jones Conservatory at Westminster University. The concert runs from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM on Wednesday, November 4.
