Utah Opera re-release of the Grammy-winning one-act symphonic electronica production about Steve Jobs, performed as part of the Opera Trio Series.
Utah Opera is bringing The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs back to the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre for a run of five performances in May 2027. It's a one-act opera by composer Mason Bates and librettist Mark Campbell, and it's a re-release of a production that's been in demand since 2022. The company is presenting it as part of its Opera Trio Series, alongside Rossini's Cinderella and Mozart's Don Giovanni.
The story follows the life, ambition, and spiritual searching of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. Sarah Coit takes the title role, with Amy Owens as Chrisann Brennan, and the Utah Symphony in the pit. The production is a joint venture owned by Utah Symphony | Utah Opera, The Atlanta Opera, Austin Opera, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, and Calgary Opera Association.
What sets this one apart is Bates's "Symphonic Electronica" style. He pairs the Utah Symphony with pulsing electronic beats and digitally inspired textures, and the production is described as feeling as epic and fresh as the first-gen iPhone's 2007 release. The show runs about an hour and 40 minutes, is rated PG-13, and is performed in English with English supertitles. If you arrive early, there's an infographic in the lobby that traces Jobs's life and milestones.
