The Utah Symphony performs Mark Knopfler's score to The Princess Bride on the big screen, with a movie-trivia quiz and wine tasting in the lobby before the screening.
The Utah Symphony is bringing The Princess Bride to Maurice Abravanel Hall on Friday, February 12 and Saturday, February 13, 2027. Both nights start at 7 PM. It's a live-to-picture event: the film plays on the big screen while the symphony performs Mark Knopfler's score in sync with the action. If you've seen the movie a dozen times, this is a chance to hear the music as a full orchestral piece rather than something running in the background.
The score was written by Mark Knopfler, the Dire Straits guitarist, and Scott Terrell will be conducting the symphony through it. The film's own promise of "fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles" is exactly what the music has to follow, all the way to the happily ever after for Buttercup and Westley.
There's a bit more to the evening than just the screening. Before the movie starts, the First Tier Room hosts a movie-trivia quiz, and there's a glass of wine in the lobby where you can test your knowledge of the cult classic before taking your seat. It's a nice way to settle in and get into the spirit of the thing before the lights go down.
