The Utah Symphony performs Stravinsky's The Firebird Suite, along with works by Mendelssohn, Clara Schumann and Vaughan Williams, conducted by Delyana Lazarova.
The Utah Symphony is playing Maurice Abravanel Hall on Friday, November 13, and Saturday, November 14, with both concerts starting at 7:30 PM. The program is built around Stravinsky's The Firebird Suite, and it's a night that pulls from a few different corners of the classical repertoire.
The Firebird started as a ballet and was revised over several decades, and it's become a staple for its storytelling and the way it's put together. The version they're playing is the 1945 revision, which is often cited as the most precise and brilliant way to experience the work, with a bold, rhythmic, and powerful score. It's the anchor of the evening, and it's the piece that gives the whole program its name.
Before that, the night opens with three other works. There's Mendelssohn's Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Vaughan Williams' Serenade to Music, which is so expressive and lyrical that he later turned it into a choral version. Then comes Clara Schumann's Piano Concerto, a lush, honey-hued piece that brings a soloist to the front. The symphony is conducted by Delyana Lazarova, and pianist Alexandra Dariescu takes the lead on the Schumann concerto.
