Serena Webb Dance Theater reimagines E.T.A. Hoffmann's classic as a Nutcracker with steampunk magic, with a scrambled score and a cast of children and adults.
Serena Webb Dance Theater brings its annual audience favorite, The Nutcracker and the Mouse Queen, to the Mid-Valley Performing Arts Center in Salt Lake City on December 16 and 17, 2026. Both shows start at 7:30 PM.
This isn't the Nutcracker you're used to. It's an original production that reimagines E.T.A. Hoffmann's classic through a steampunk lens, with a scrambled score and a cast made up of both children and adults. One detail that stands out: the Mouse Queen is the only dancer on pointe, which gives her a distinct presence on stage compared to everyone else.
The choreography comes from Angie Banchero-Kelleher and Amy Markgraf, both professors of Modern Dance at Utah Valley University and long-time figures in Utah's dance community. They've worked with Serena Webb for years, and their influence is all over this version.

Webb herself has deep roots in the local scene. She earned her BFA in Modern Dance from Utah Valley University, co-founded Body Logic Dance Company in 2009, and launched her own company and school in 2023. This production is one of the annual traditions her company puts on.
If you're a dancer, there's a way to get involved beyond the audience: the company is holding auditions for ages 6 and up, as well as for adults 18 and over. Otherwise, you can catch the show at the Mid-Valley Performing Arts Center on December 16 and 17, with both performances starting at 7:30 PM.
