Family-friendly ballet production of Cinderella by Ballet West, with narration, for children and families.
Ballet West brings The Glass Slipper to the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre on Friday, April 2 and Saturday, April 3, 2027. It's a family-friendly retelling of the Cinderella story, told through narration and performed by Ballet West II and members of the Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy. Instead of the company's principal dancers, the stage belongs to the next generation of Ballet West's younger artists, with choreography by Pamela Robinson-Harris and music by Sergei Prokofiev.
It's designed as an introduction to live theatre for children, which explains the shorter runtimeβjust over an hour with one intermission. The narration helps carry the story along, so it works well if you're bringing kids who might not be used to a full ballet. The Saturday evening performance is presented exclusively with Spanish narration, so if you're looking for that specifically, that's your night.
The venue is a Salt Lake landmark in its own right. The Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre opened in 1913 as the Orpheum Theatre, a vaudeville house, and it's now home to resident companies Ballet West and Utah Opera. It also houses the city's historic Nutcracker production, first staged in 1944 by founder William Christensen and designated a Living Historic Landmark by the state of Utah. The building was designed by architect Gustave Albert Lansburgh, who used the latest technologies of the time, including steel reinforcement and a terra cotta-clad exterior.
