Ballet West contemporary ballet programme of five works, including the Utah premiere of Christopher Bruce's 'Rooster' set to Rolling Stones classics.
Ballet West brings Rolling with the Stones to the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre this November, a contemporary ballet program that puts five different works on one bill. It runs from November 6 through November 14, with performances on Friday the 6th and Saturday the 7th at 7:30 PM, Thursday the 12th at 7:30 PM, and Saturday the 14th with a 2:00 PM matinee and a 7:30 PM evening show.
The program is built around two premieres. The first is the company's first staging of Ulysses Dove's Dancing on the Front Porch of Heaven, a moving elegy on love and loss set to music by Arvo Pärt. The second is the Utah premiere of Christopher Bruce's Rooster, a hip, stylish piece set to a fusion of Rolling Stones classics. Those two anchor the evening, and the rest of the bill fills in around them: Christopher Wheeldon's Je ne t'Aime Pas and This Bitter Earth—the latter set to Dinah Washington as arranged by Max Richter—and Ben Stevenson's Three Preludes, set to Sergei Rachmaninoff. It's a wide range of music to cover in one night, from Pärt's stillness to the Stones.
Ballet West describes the show as a cutting-edge contemporary program, and the five works together give you a good sense of where the company is working. Between the two premieres and the three returning pieces, you'll see a mix of new material and established work, with the Stones-inspired Rooster providing the high-energy side of the bill.
