Perfumer Dimitri Allouch of HEXEH shows how aroma molecules combine, blending science with perfumery, as attendees build their own simple accord.
The Chemistry of Smell Perfume Workshop is at the Natural History Museum of Utah on Sunday, November 8, from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM. It's part of ScienceFest, a two-day celebration of the science happening in Utah that fills the museum with hands-on activities for all ages, so if you're planning to spend the weekend there, this is one of the sessions to work into your morning.
Perfumer Dimitri Allouch of HEXEH leads the hour. The workshop starts with the basics: how molecules create the scents we perceive and how our brains make sense of the world through smell. From there, Allouch uses the scent of a flower as a hands-on example to show how single aroma molecules can combine into something richer, blending the science of chemistry with the art of perfumery. You'll smell the individual components one by one, and then you'll build your own simple accord to take home with you.

It's a good fit if you've ever wondered why a certain smell triggers a memory or how a perfume is actually put together. You get to see the building blocks of a scent before you mix them yourself, and you leave with a small bottle of your own work. The museum is at 301 Wakara Way in Salt Lake City, and the workshop runs from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM on November 8.
