Book group for 6th to 9th graders to practice reading and comprehension skills by reading short stories and novellas aloud.
Teen Reads Book Group meets at the Salt Lake City Public Library Main Branch on Tuesday, November 3, for another session of reading aloud together. It's a group for 6th through 9th graders, so it's aimed at middle schoolers and the younger end of high school.
The format is straightforward: the group works through short stories and novellas, reading them aloud and talking through them as they go. Reading aloud changes how a story lands—you hear the rhythm of the prose and the timing of the dialogue in a way you don't when you're reading silently. It also turns reading into something social rather than a solo activity, which is a nice shift for kids who usually only read for school assignments.
Between the reading and the discussion, the group focuses on reading and comprehension skills. That's the practical side of it: practicing how to follow a narrative, pick up on detail, and talk about what's happening on the page. Because they stick to short stories and novellas, they can finish a whole piece of work in a reasonable amount of time, which keeps things moving and gives a sense of accomplishment that a massive novel doesn't always offer.
