Immersive adaptation of Karel Capek's R.U.R. where audiences explore Rossum's factory.
The SLCC Theatre Department is bringing R.U.R. - Rossum's Unified Robots to The Grand Theatre in Salt Lake City, with performances running November 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, and 14. It's an immersive adaptation of the 1921 play by Czech writer Karel Capek, and the production changes the way you watch it: instead of sitting in a seat, you're placed inside Rossum's factory, where you can move around and explore the world on your own terms.
There's a bit of history to the source material that's worth knowing before you go. Capek is the man who actually invented the word 'robot' in this play, and the story he wrote around it imagined a future shaped by artificial workers. This production leans into that premise by turning the setting into a space you can walk through, so you're not just watching the story unfold from the edge of the stage—you're inside the factory where it all happens.
Because it's immersive, the experience changes depending on where you spend your time. You're free to wander and uncover the secrets of the factory as the play moves around you, which means you'll probably see things other people miss. If you're the kind of theatergoer who prefers to be in the middle of the action rather than watching from a distance, this is exactly the kind of show that works for you.
