Utah Opera's production of Rossini's Cinderella, a joyful and whimsical retelling of the classic fairytale, sung in Italian with English supertitles.
Utah Opera brings Rossini's Cinderella to the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre this January, with five performances running from January 16 through January 24. The opera is known in Italian as La Cenerentola, and it's one of Gioachino Rossini's finest comedies—his best-known follow-up to The Barber of Seville. It's a joyful retelling of the classic rags-to-riches fairytale, with a heartfelt love story at its center.
On stage, Camille Sherman takes the title role as Angelina, with Chris Mosz as Don Ramiro. Steven White conducts the orchestra, and Michael Shell directs. The production is sung in Italian with English supertitles, so you can follow the story even if you don't speak the language. It runs about three hours and is rated G, which makes it an easy one to bring the whole family to.
There's a bit of a twist in this staging: the stepsisters wander the lobby as mischievous, playful characters, adding a touch of interactive fun to the evening. It's a nice detail that brings the action out of the seats and into the room. The production is part of Utah Opera's Opera Trio Series for the 2026-27 season, which also includes Mozart's Don Giovanni and Mason Bates and Mark Campbell's The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs, with the Utah Symphony providing the music from the pit.
