Chamber music concert by the NOVA Chamber Music Series pairing Caroline Shaw's contemporary piece with Buxtehude's baroque work and Gartenlaub's 'Parcours'.
NOVA Chamber Music Series brings ...to the hands to Libby Gardner Concert Hall on Sunday, November 15, at 3 PM. It's part of the Libby Gardner Series, one of the two strands of NOVA's season—the other being the Gallery Series. Artistic Director Kimi Kawashima curates the whole thing, which runs seven concerts in total: five in the Libby Gardner Series and two in the Gallery Series. The series focuses on chamber repertoire and Utah's resident artists, with commissions, educational programs, and recordings as part of the mix.
The program puts Caroline Shaw's ...to the hands (2016) side by side with its baroque companion, Dieterich Buxtehude's Ad Manus (1680), both sung by the Sound of Ages chamber choir. The set also includes a sonata for two violins by Jacquet de la Guerre and closes with Odette Gartenlaub's Parcours (1975), written for amplified harpsichord. It's a wide span of time to cover in one afternoon—from the late 17th century to the 21st.
On stage, the ensemble brings together a few different sounds. Alex Woods and Aubrey Woods are on violins, Jason Hardink on harpsichord, and Louis Robillard on cello, with Sam Handley adding electric guitar. The Sound of Ages chamber choir is conducted by Kameron Kavanaugh. Having an electric guitar and an amplified harpsichord in the same room as a baroque sonata and a choir is a good hint at how the afternoon is built: it's not just about the old stuff, and it's not just about the new.
