Utah Opera's production of Mozart's Don Giovanni, performed in Italian with English supertitles at the Capitol Theatre.
Utah Opera brings Mozart's Don Giovanni to the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre for a run of five performances in March 2027. It's one of Mozart's most famous operas, based on a centuries-old legend with a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte. The story follows an arrogant nobleman who spends his life seducing and manipulating everyone around him, only to finally meet something he can't outwit. It's a wide-ranging piece that swings from comedic highs to melodrama and supernatural suspense, and it's built around some of Mozart's most recognizable arias.
On stage, Caroline Corrales takes the title role, with Sara Gartland as Donna Anna, Musa Ngqungwana as Donna Elvira, Hyein Hong as Leporello, and J. Andrew Garratt Jr. as Zerlina. The production is sung in Italian with English supertitles, so you can follow the plot even if you don't speak the language. It runs about three hours with an intermission, and it's rated PG-13 for violence and adult themes. The music is handled by the Utah Symphony, with the Utah Opera Chorus filling out the sound. Conner Gray Covington conducts, Eric Einhorn directs the stage, and Alexander Birch Elliott serves as chorus director and assistant conductor.
If you want to get a bit more out of the evening, there are two additions for ticket holders. Before each performance, there's an Opera Talk in the Capitol Room that runs about an hour, and after the show, a Post Opera Q&A with Utah Opera's Artistic Director. Both are optional, so you can just come for the performance or make a full afternoon or evening of it.
