Free after-school yarn painting workshop for youth and children led by artist Virginia Catherall, inspired by Wixárika (Huichol) art.
Virginia Catherall is leading a yarn painting workshop at the Marmalade Branch of The City Library on Monday, November 9, from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM. Catherall is an artist and the education curator at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, and she'll be guiding participants through the process of creating their own landscape yarn painting.
The session is inspired by the beauty of nature and by the yarn paintings in the UMFA education collection. Yarn painting originates from the Wixárika (Huichol) culture of Mexico, and the museum's collection includes a Huichol plant offering made from yarn, adhesive, and board. That's the same basic combination you'll be working with: colorful yarn pressed into adhesive on a board to build up a picture. The goal is to create a landscape, so you'll be thinking about nature as you work.
This is part of the UMFA's broader program of art activities in community spaces across Utah, bringing museum-led workshops out of the gallery and into neighborhoods. It's a good way to get a hands-on look at a tradition that usually stays behind glass. The workshop is aimed at youth and children only, though the museum welcomes adults at its other workshops throughout the year.
