Program by the SLC Park Rangers on how local wildlife survives the winter, held at the Ensign Peak Plaza.
M.A.D. About Winter: How Wildlife Survives the Season is coming to Ensign Peak Plaza on Tuesday, October 20, from 12 PM to 1 PM. The program is put on by the SLC Park Rangers, and it's built around a question most of us only think about once the first frost hits: how do the animals around us actually make it through a Salt Lake winter?
The premise is pretty stark. When winter descends, wildlife is forced to do what it can to survive with limited options: migrate, adapt, or die. The rangers walk through how local animals handle that choice, and the talk focuses on the species that stay right here in the valley rather than heading south. It's a good look at the strategies that keep them going when the food disappears and the temperature drops.
If you've spent any time outdoors in the city, you've probably seen the birds that stick around or the deer moving through the foothills, and this is your chance to hear the actual mechanics behind how they manage. The SLC Park Rangers lead the session, so you're getting it from the people who work with the land and the wildlife every day. It's an hour-long program, and since it's at Ensign Peak Plaza, you're right up in the foothills where a lot of this is actually happening.
