Choral concert by the Salt Lake Vocal Artists of commissioned works by Dan Forrest, Ola Gjeilo, Jake Runestad and Ēriks Ešenvalds.
Salt Lake Vocal Artists are performing at St. Ambrose Catholic Church on Saturday, November 14, with a program they've titled Light Beyond Shadow: A Musical Journey. It's a choral concert, and the bulk of the set comes from commissioned works written specifically for them by four of the most active names in contemporary choral music: Dan Forrest, Ola Gjeilo, Jake Runestad, and Ēriks Ešenvalds.
If you've followed the choral scene over the last decade or so, you'll recognize those names. They're all known for writing music that's melodic and accessible without being simple, and they're among the most performed living composers in the field. Having four of them on one program gives the evening a bit of a survey feel—each brings their own approach to the voice, and since these were commissioned pieces, you're hearing them as they were intended to be performed.
The commissioned works aren't the whole story, though. The group is also bringing in new music by Elaine Hagenberg and Daniel Elder, along with pieces from other contemporary choral composers. Between the commissions and the additions, the program stays firmly in the present rather than leaning on the standard repertoire you'll hear at almost any church concert. It's a night of music written in our own time.
