Big band jazz evening by the University of Utah Jazz Program with classic arrangements and student compositions.
The University of Utah Jazz Program is bringing the Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Repertory Ensemble to Libby Gardner Concert Hall on Saturday, November 14, from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM. It's a big band night on the U's campus, and the program is built around two ensembles sharing the stage.
The set mixes traditional and modern big band jazz, and the two sides of that description are where the evening gets its shape. On one hand, there are classic arrangements—the kind of charts that define the big band sound. On the other, there are original compositions and arrangements written by the students themselves. Hearing those two things in the same set gives you a sense of where the music comes from and where these players are taking it.
Both ensembles are under the direction of Dr. Josiah Boornazian and Dr. Steven Heffner, and the performance is billed as a U Arts Pass event. The hall is at 1375 East Presidents Circle in Salt Lake City, so you're right in the heart of the university campus.
