Folk singer Jake Xerxes Fussell performs live with Dougie Poole at The State Room, an ages 21+ venue.
Jake Xerxes Fussell plays The State Room on Tuesday, November 3, with Dougie Poole opening. Fussell is a folk singer who grew up in Georgia and now lives in North Carolina, and he's built his following as a contemplative interpreter of a vast archive of folk songs. He's released five studio albums, starting with his self-titled debut on Paradise of Bachelors in 2015. His most recent, When I'm Called, was produced by James Elkington and features Ben Whiteley of The Weather Station, Joe Westerlund of Bon Iver and Califone, and Blake Mills on guitar, with Joan Shelley and Robin Holcomb on backing vocals.
Beyond his own records, Fussell collaborated with Elkington on the score for the feature film Rebuilding, directed by Max Walker-Silverman and starring Josh O'Connor; the soundtrack came out on Fat Possum Records in November 2025. The critics have a high opinion of his approach: The Guardian called him "one of the great magpies of American song," and Ann Powers of NPR described him as "maybe the leading interpreter of American folk music right now."
