String quartet concert by the Isidore Quartet with works by Mozart, Billy Childs and Beethoven, with a pre-concert talk.
Isidore Quartet plays Libby Gardner Concert Hall on Wednesday, January 13, 2027, as part of the Chamber Music Society of Salt Lake City's 2026/27 season. The quartet consists of Adrian Steele and Phoenix Avalon on violin, Devin Moore on viola, and Clara Abel on cello.
The program runs through three different eras. They open with Mozart's String Quartet No. 21 in D major 'Prussian' (K.575, also known as 'The Violet'), a piece from the late 1780s. From there they move to the contemporary: Billy Childs' String Quartet No. 4 'American Mosaic', which the group premiered in February 2026 and has since kept close to home. They close with Beethoven's String Quartet No. 8 in E minor, Op. 59 'Razumovsky', No. 2, one of the three quartets Beethoven wrote for the Russian ambassador in Vienna.
Isidore is a New York City ensemble formed in 2019. They've spent the last few years revisiting and reinvigorating the chamber music repertoire, a project they say was heavily influenced by the Juilliard String Quartet. The name itself is a nod to Isidore Cohen, an early member of that group. Along the way they've picked up the 2022 Banff International String Quartet Competition and the 2023 Avery Fisher Career Grant, and have played at Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, London's Wigmore Hall, and the Paris Philharmonie. The Chicago Classical Review described them as having a "polished sonority and well-balanced, tightly synchronized ensemble."
