Live concert by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Foy Vance, playing The Commonwealth Room on West Commonwealth Avenue.
Foy Vance plays The Commonwealth Room on Tuesday, November 17, 2026. He's a Northern Irish singer and songwriter whose career has been shaped by a single, sharp loss: in January 1999, while playing a gig on the Spanish island of Lanzarote, he had a moment of transcendence on stage, only to learn the next morning that his father had suffered a fatal heart attack that very night.
His father had been a traveling preacher who moved the family to the American South and taught Vance guitar as a young child. That loss left a void Vance resolved to fill with music, and he set out to make seven albums informed by it. The seventh, The Wake, was produced by Ethan Johns and brings his gritty vocals to a convergence of folk, soul, and Southern blues. It closes a run that began with his 2007 debut Hope and includes The Wild Swan (2016), executive-produced by Elton John; From Muscle Shoals and To Memphis (2019), recorded at FAME Studios and Sam Phillips Recordings Studios; and Signs of Life (2021), partly made at his home in the Scottish Highlands.
It's a long road from that first record in 2007 to the one he's touring now, and the Southern influence runs through all of itβthe American South where he grew up, the Muscle Shoals and Memphis studios where he recorded, and the soul and blues that surface in The Wake. The show is just Vance, and the set draws from that same line of work.
