NOVA Chamber Music concert by the Fry Street Quartet pairing Beethoven's String Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 127 with works by contemporary composer Brittany J. Green.
The Fry Street Quartet plays the Utah Museum of Fine Arts on Sunday, March 21, 2027, at 3 PM. It's part of the NOVA Chamber Music Series, and the program puts one of Beethoven's late string quartets—the String Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 127—alongside two pieces by American composer Brittany J. Green: Lead me Home (2021) and i get out. (2023), the latter written for double bass and electronics. Kaija Saariaho's Ciel Étoile (1999) rounds out the set.
The whole afternoon is built around Green. The Fry Street Quartet is NOVA's quartet-in-residence, and they're pairing Beethoven's late-period writing with Green's more recent work. It's a composer portrait, so the focus stays on her voice across the program. NOVA is co-commissioning Green for its upcoming 50th anniversary, so this is a good chance to hear her work before the big milestone arrives.
This concert is one of seven in NOVA's 2026-2027 season, which artistic director Kimi Kawashima has framed as a warm-up for the golden anniversary celebrations due in 2027-2028. Every concert in the season features at least one work by a current, active composer, with a world premiere and several Utah premieres mixed in. Four of the seven programs highlight women composers, and this one is one of them. The series also has a new executive director, Hannah Thomas-Hollands, a former Utah Symphony cellist who joined the leadership this season.
