Compagnie Hervé Koubi brings its gravity-defying fusion of contemporary movement, capoeira and urban dance, Sol Invictus, to Salt Lake City.
Compagnie Hervé Koubi brings Sol Invictus to Kingsbury Hall on Tuesday, March 2, 2027, at 7:30 PM. It's the company's first time performing in Salt Lake City, and they're bringing a piece that pulls from a few different worlds at once.
Sol Invictus takes its name from the 'invincible sun,' a deity of Ancient Rome, and the work lives up to the gravity-defying description. It's a fusion of contemporary movement, capoeira, and urban dance—three styles that don't always share the same stage, but here they run together. The result is a kinetic piece that leans into the athletic, high-energy side of dance rather than the slow or static.
Behind the work is choreographer Hervé Koubi, who spent his early years as a contemporary dancer working with leading European choreographers before founding his own company in 2000. He describes his goal as exploring how movement connects cultures across generations. A lot of that comes from a return to his Algerian roots and an interest in urban dance, and you can see those influences in how he blends contemporary, street, and traditional forms. He's been working with dancer and choreographer Fayçal Hamlat to keep redefining 21st-century ballet as an inclusive, boundary-crossing practice.
