Free organ recital by Bryan Anderson at the Cathedral of the Madeleine within the long-running Eccles Organ Festival.
Bryan Anderson plays the organ at The Cathedral of the Madeleine on Sunday, November 8, as part of the Eccles Organ Festival. The concert starts at 8 PM, and it's free of charge.
If you haven't come across it before, the Eccles Organ Festival is a long-running recital series that's been bringing organ music to Salt Lake City for free since 1993. It was started at the request of the George S. and Dolores DorΓ© Eccles Foundation, which also helped fund the instrument Anderson will be playing: the Kenneth Jones 77/79 rank mechanical action English-style organ. It was installed in the cathedral after its renovation and serves both sacred music and the concert stage. The festival is now in its 33rd season, and director and cathedral organist Gabriele Terrone has noted how it's grown over the last decade.
The programming usually balances celebrated masterpieces by giants like Bach, Franck, and Widor with newer compositions and lesser-known repertoire. Beyond the recitals, the festival includes masterclasses, public lectures, and Open Gallery Nights, where you can learn about the instrument's history and even try playing it yourself. Every recital is live-streamed and archived on the festival's YouTube channel, so if you can't make it in person, you can still catch the performance later.
