A baroque concert conducted by Nicholas McGegan featuring works by Bach, Haydn and Vivaldi, performed by the Utah Symphony and Brigham Young University ensembles.
Nicholas McGegan leads the Utah Symphony in Beloved Baroque: Bach, Haydn, & Vivaldi at Abravanel Hall on Friday, April 9, and Saturday, April 10, 2027. Both performances start at 7:30 PM. It's a Baroque-focused program, which is a relatively rare treat on the Abravanel stage.
The evening brings together three big names of the era. Bach takes up a good part of the set with his Orchestral Suite No. 3 and Brandenburg Concerto No. 4—two pieces you'll likely recognize. The Air on the G String from the suite is a wedding favorite, and the Brandenburg is one of his most famous concertos. Haydn adds Ave Regina, and Vivaldi rounds things out with Gloria. It's a program of high-baroque classics, the kind of music that sounds as familiar as it does distinct.
McGegan isn't doing this alone. He's joined by soprano Nola Richardson, soprano Sarah Scofield, and mezzo-soprano Meg Bragle, with the Brigham Young University Singers and Concert Choir providing the choral weight for the vocal works. The concert is part of the USUO Masterworks Series, a six-concert mini-season the organization describes as the crown jewel of its season, built around classical favorites.
