Holiday concert by the 33-member handbell ensemble Bells at Temple Square, conducted by Geoff Anderson and Mat Ulmer, at the Salt Lake Tabernacle.
Bells at Temple Square returns to the Tabernacle on Temple Square on Saturday, November 20, with a holiday concert titled Ring Out with Joy. It's part of the Tabernacle Choir's concert series, and this year the handbells take center stage.
The ensemble is a 33-member handbell group, so you're hearing a lot of bells ringing at once rather than a small group. They'll be playing holiday music throughout the set, and they aren't alone up there. Geoff Anderson and Mat Ulmer are conducting, and organists Linda Margetts and Joseph Peeples will be on the organ. The organ is a big part of the sound here, and with two organists in the mix, it'll be more than just background accompaniment.
That organ presence fits the room. The Tabernacle on Temple Square has a long history with pipe organ music—daily organ recitals have been a tradition there for more than a century, played by Tabernacle and Temple Square organists as well as guests. So when you hear the organ filling out the handbells, it's a sound the building was practically made for.
