The Utah Symphony presents Beethoven's First Piano Concerto with pianist Yekwon Sunwoo, plus Schumann's Symphony No. 2.
The Utah Symphony is bringing Yekwon Sunwoo to Maurice Abravanel Hall for two performances: Friday, March 19, 2027, at 7:30 PM and Saturday, March 20, at 5:30 PM. The program centers on Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1, with the symphony conducted by Earl Lee.
That concerto is arguably Beethoven's most beloved early work for virtuosos. He wrote it when he was at his most energetic and brilliant, already steeped in fame and fortune and ready to conquer Vienna. It's paired here with the Overture to Egmont, another Beethoven piece, and Schumann's Symphony No. 2. The Schumann is regarded as a bright, heroic breakthrough in what was otherwise an anxious and nerve-wracking late period for the composer, so the two halves of the program lean toward the more spirited side of the repertoire.
Sunwoo takes the piano part. She holds the record for the most first-place competition wins by a Korean pianist, and this is her first time appearing with the symphony. If you're coming early, there's a pre-concert chat with the guest artists and symphony musicians 45 minutes before the performance in the First Tier Room.
