Contemporary percussion works by Jlin and Aurél Holló from the Utah Percussion Group, plus The Global Music Ensemble and the Utah Drumline's 'Streetbeats Showcase'.
The Utah Percussion Group takes the stage at Libby Gardner Concert Hall on Monday, November 9, for An Evening of Percussion, a concert presented by the University of Utah School of Music. It's a full night of percussion from three different ensembles, each bringing a different tradition to the same stage.
The evening opens with the Utah Percussion Group, an award-winning ensemble that works with contemporary percussion. They'll be performing pieces by two international composers, Jlin and Aurél Holló, whose work pushes the boundaries of what percussion can do. Following them is the Global Music Ensemble, which brings traditional non-Western music and dance to life with a dynamic lineup of instrumentalists. The night closes with the Utah Drumline, bringing its Streetbeats Showcase to the concert stage—the same set that's a regular at Gamedays at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
Between the three, you'll hear contemporary percussion, traditional music and dance from outside the West, and the high-energy drumline that most people only see on game days. It's a broad spread for one night, and the ensembles are all part of the same school.
