A concert of patriotic songs and anthems celebrating America's 250th anniversary, featuring the Salt Lake Choral Artists and the Utah National Guard 23rd Army Band.
Salt Lake Choral Artists take the stage at Libby Gardner Hall on Saturday, October 17, for America the Beautiful: A 250th Anniversary Celebration. It's a double-bill day, with performances at 2 PM and 7:30 PM, so you can pick the matinee or the evening show.
The concert marks the country's semiquincentennial—the 250th anniversary—and the program is built around patriotic songs, anthems, American folk music, and Americana favorites. Howard Hanson's Song of Democracy sits alongside God Bless America, Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor, The Battle Hymn of the Republic, and America the Beautiful. It's a collection of songs that most of us recognize by heart, brought together for one specific occasion.
On the podium, the Salt Lake Choral Artists are led by Artistic Director and Conductor Dr. Brady Allred. They're joined by the Utah National Guard 23rd Army Band, conducted by Commander Spencer Frohm. Having a full military band on stage alongside a choral ensemble changes the scale of these pieces—the brass and percussion of the band give the anthems a weight and a presence that a piano or a small organ can't quite reach.
