Concert by the Detroit chamber reed quintet Akropolis Reed Quintet, with guest artists soprano Shara Nova, baritone Kenneth Overton and pianist Pascal Le Boeuf.
Akropolis Reed Quintet plays the Libby Gardner Concert Hall on Wednesday, November 5, at 7:30 PM. They aren't coming alone: soprano Shara Nova, baritone Kenneth Overton, and pianist/composer Pascal Le Boeuf will be joining them on stage. The performance is part of the 2026/2027 season at UtahPresents, the University of Utah program that also manages Kingsbury Hall and runs the ReachUP education and outreach initiative.
If you haven't come across them before, Akropolis is a Detroit-based chamber ensemble founded in 2009 at the University of Michigan. BBC Music Magazine has described them as a "sonically daring ensemble who specializes in performing new works with charisma and integrity," and that's a fair summary of what they do. They've commissioned and premiered more than 200 works by living composers, so their set lists tend to lean toward the contemporary rather than the standard repertoire.
They've also got the awards to back it up. They've hit the Billboard charts and picked up seven national prizes, and their 2024 recording Strands won the 2025 GRAMMY Award for Best Instrumental Composition. Beyond the stage, they run the Detroit-based Together We Sound Festival and hold school-year composition residencies at Cass Tech, MLK High School, and Detroit School of Arts, as well as an annual Akropolis Chamber Music Institute in partnership with Interlochen Center for the Arts.
