The NC Symphony performs Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet suite, along with works by Lutoslawski and Mozart, conducted by Anna Sułkowska-Migoń.
The North Carolina Symphony is bringing Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet to Meymandi Concert Hall in Raleigh on Friday, April 9, and Saturday, April 10. Both nights start at 8 PM. If you're closer to Chapel Hill, there's a third performance on Sunday, April 11, at Memorial Hall at 3 PM. The same program runs across all three dates, so you can pick whichever night and city fits your schedule best.
Conducting is Anna Sułkowska-Migoń, and the program is built around three very different works. It opens with Lutosławski's Little Suite, a piece that's a bit more on the playful side. From there, the focus shifts to the bassoon, with Aaron Apaza taking the lead on Mozart's Bassoon Concerto. It's a great spot in the set—a single instrument stepping out from the rest of the orchestra for its own moment. The night closes with the Suite from Romeo and Juliet by Prokofiev, the piece that gives the whole weekend its name. If you've heard the ballet, you'll recognize the themes; if you haven't, it's a good place to start with it.
Between the Lutosławski, the Mozart, and the Prokofiev, the evening moves from a light suite to a classical concerto and then into the sweeping, cinematic sound of the Romeo and Juliet suite. It's a broad range for one program, and having the bassoon as a featured soloist gives the middle of the night something distinct to hold onto.
