The North Carolina Symphony and North Carolina Master Chorale present Handel's Messiah, a moving holiday tradition, with guest vocalists Yulia Van Doren, Leah Wool, Isaiah Bell and Will Liverman.
The North Carolina Symphony brings Handel's Messiah to the Meymandi Concert Hall at the Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, December 4, and Saturday, December 5. It's a holiday tradition in Raleigh that carries from the opening overture through to the 'Hallelujah' Chorus, and this year it puts the symphony together with the North Carolina Master Chorale and a group of guest vocalists.
Michael Francis conducts the symphony, and the vocal roles are filled by Yulia Van Doren on soprano, Leah Wool on alto, Isaiah Bell on tenor, and Will Liverman on bass. With the full choir and the orchestra behind them, the four soloists take the lead on the work's most famous arias, and the Master Chorale handles the larger choral movements that give the piece its scale.
If you go on Friday night, there's a bit more to the evening. The concert is preceded by an Ovations performance by student musicians from the North Carolina Chamber Music Institute, which opens the doors early so you can settle in before the main work begins. Saturday is a matinee, so you've got a choice between a Friday night out or a Saturday afternoon.
