Carolina Ballet stages the romantic ballet Giselle, a ghost story of love and betrayal, at the Fletcher Opera Theater.
Carolina Ballet brings Giselle to the Fletcher Opera Theatre in Raleigh, with performances running February 4 through 14, 2027. It's one of the most celebrated stories in classical dance, and if you've never seen it, it's a good place to start with the classics.
Giselle first premiered in 1841, and the story is a ghost story that starts in a sunlit village. Giselle is a gentle peasant girl who falls for Albrecht, a nobleman disguised as a peasant who's already promised to another. When his betrothal comes to light, her heart gives way and she dies, joining the Wilisβthe restless spirits of brides betrayed by their lovers. When Albrecht comes to mourn at her grave, the Wilis turn on him, but Giselle's compassion survives death and spares him their wrath. The company bills it as a haunting, timeless affirmation that love transcends the boundaries of life and death.
Carolina Ballet is the company behind the staging. They build community around a repertoire of great classics and new works, and they train young dancers at the School of Carolina Ballet. Giselle is one of those great classics they've built their name on.
