World premiere of Carolina Ballet's Dracula, a two-act ballet that reimagines the man who came before the legend, blending gothic themes with a human depiction of adoration, piety, and deception.
Carolina Ballet is bringing a world premiere to the A.J. Fletcher Opera Theater at Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts this fall: Dracula, a two-act ballet that opens Thursday, October 15, and runs through Sunday, November 1. It's a new work from the company, and it doesn't start with the vampire we all know.
Instead, it looks at the man who came before the legend. He starts as a loyal servant of the church, leaving his new bride to fight in its name. While he's away, false news of his death reaches home, and her longing for reunification costs her her life. When he finally returns to find her gone, he renounces his faithβand at that crossroad of ruin, Dracula is born. It's a gothic story, but the company describes it as a human depiction of adoration, piety, and deception, so the focus is as much on the grief and the betrayal as it is on the supernatural.
It's a full-company production, with the entire ensemble on stage, set to a novel score. The two acts give the story room to breathe, moving from the man's life of faith to the aftermath that transforms him. The A.J. Fletcher Opera Theater is a 600-seat room on the east side of the Martin Marietta Center, designed for opera, dance, music, and theater in an intimate setting, and it's the home of Carolina Ballet.
