The 30th American Indian Heritage Celebration, a community event highlighting the traditional and contemporary artistic, historical and cultural contributions of North Carolina's American Indian communities.
The 30th Annual American Indian Heritage Celebration comes to the North Carolina Museum of Art on Saturday, November 21, from 11 AM to 4 PM. It's the big wrap-up to American Indian Heritage Month in North Carolina, and this year marks three decades of the event. The NC American Indian Heritage Commission puts it together with support from the North Carolina Commission of Indian Affairs and the North Carolina American Indian Commission.
What you'll find there is a look at the traditional and contemporary artistic, historical, and cultural contributions of the state's American Indian communities. It's a broad reach—art and history side by side, and old traditions alongside newer work. The day brings together members of all eight state-recognized tribes, so you're seeing representation from across the state in one place rather than just one community. That's a good chunk of the state's Indigenous presence gathered under one roof.
There's a clear thread running through the years, too. The advisory board describes the consistent theme as visibility, and they put it plainly: "Indigenous people are still here!" That's the core of the day—making sure these communities are seen and heard, not just as part of the past, but as a living presence in North Carolina today.
