A self-guided art walk featuring illuminated art installations by local and international artists throughout Downtown Raleigh, best viewed in the evenings.
Illuminate Art Walk returns to Downtown Raleigh this winter, running from Saturday, December 5, 2026, through Thursday, January 7, 2027. It's a self-guided walk through a series of illuminated art installations spread across the city center, and it's best viewed in the evenings between 5 PM and 11 PM.
The installations are scattered across several well-known spots: Fayetteville Street, Exchange Plaza, Market Plaza, Moore Square, the Performing Arts Center, Raleigh Union Station, and 410 Glenwood Avenue. Because it's self-guided, you can take it at your own pace, starting wherever you like and weaving through the different sites over a few hours or spreading it out over several nights. The route is designed to be Sip N' Stroll friendly, with most of the installations within a couple of blocks of free parking.
There's a bit of history behind it that explains why it feels the way it does. The walk started during the darkest days of the 2020 pandemic lockdown, when the Downtown Raleigh Alliance set up displays in a few empty storefronts as a "symbolism of light in darkness." It drew far more foot traffic than anyone expected and has since grown into a staple of the city's holiday season, with some weekend nights bringing in up to 25,000 people. Every year, the Alliance pairs an international piece with works by local artists, and they've kept the focus on art rather than a standard holiday light show, though they still leave room for traditional elements.

It runs alongside THE RINK at Red Hat Amphitheater and events at the Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts, so it's easy to make a full evening of it. The walk is free, and since it stays up through early January, you've got plenty of time to fit it in.
