Folksinger Willi Carlisle performs his album Winged Victory live at Mississippi Studios, known for intelligent songs and theatrical stage banter.
Willi Carlisle plays Mississippi Studios on Friday, December 11, at 9 PM. He's performing Winged Victory live, the album he released in 2025 and the first one he produced himself.
Carlisle is an Arkansas-based country-folk singer-songwriter from Kansas. His music sits in traditional folk and old-timey styles, and he describes it as balancing absurdity, spectacle, and philosophy. He's a poetic storyteller and a multi-instrumentalist who writes about queer life and rural America. The live show is as much about the songs and the stage banter as it is about the giant puppets being hit with skillets.
Winged Victory is his most recent record, and it follows Critterland (2024) and Peculiar, Missouri. Stereogum named him an Artist To Watch on the strength of Critterland. Since then, he's put out The Universal Bubba, a double album produced by Americana star Tyler Childers and recorded over two weeks at a New Orleans home studio with Childers' touring band backing him. The Portland date is one stop on a 46-show tour across 44 cities.
