Exhibition by Marco Brambilla featuring Heaven's Gate and Anthology, video and photo-montage works exploring Hollywood dreams and excess.
Marco Brambilla brings Maximalist Dreamscapes to the Portland Art Museum, running from November 20, 2025, through February 21, 2027. It's a long run, so you've got plenty of time to catch it. The show is a lavish, satirical take on the silver-screen spectacle of Hollywood dreams and excesses, and it centers on two of Brambilla's works: Heaven's Gate (2021) and Anthology (2025).
Heaven's Gate is a high-definition 3D 8K video that ascends through the seven levels of purgatory, with each stage drawing on iconic moments from cinematic history. It's the kind of piece that asks you to sit with it for a while, watching it climb through those levels. Anthology is a photo-montage printed on wallpaper, and it works on a different frequency: it mirrors how we recall films as a series of iconic moments and emotional cues, building a memory timeline of still images that act as pauses or reflections within a film's narrative. Together, they look at cinema from two sides—one as a continuous, ascending journey and the other as a collection of frozen frames.
