Concert by the Montreal psych-pop band Elephant Stone at Mississippi Studios.
Elephant Stone play Mississippi Studios on Wednesday, February 3, 2027. The Montreal group has spent the last 15 years at the vanguard of the psych-pop universe, and they're coming to Portland with a sound that blends Western psych-pop with Indian classical tradition.
Frontman Rishi Dhir plays sitar, and that's where the band's particular pull comes from. His playing infuses the music with meditations on loss and existential wonder, and it's been a constant through their discography. Their 2009 debut, The Seven Seas, was long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize and shaped by Dhir's spiritual travels in India. The Glass Box (2010) echoed Big Star; the self-titled album of 2013 pushed their psychedelic rock; and The Three Poisons (2014) took a darker turn influenced by Buddhist teachings.
They've continued to shift since then. Ship of Fools (2016) brought in synths, and Hollow (2020) depicted a world on edge. In 2022, they released a French EP, Le Voyage de M. Lonely dans la Lune, which won a GAMIQ. Their latest album, Back Into the Dream (2024), brings the ethereal and the tangible together. Along the way, they've collaborated with Beck and The Brian Jonestown Massacre.
