Grammy-winning Americana songwriter Dave Alvin performs new and old songs, with special guests Victor Krummenacher and Casey Neill.
Dave Alvin plays Mississippi Studios on Thursday, October 15, with Chris Miller by his side. The set is billed as New and Old Songs, so you'll hear the newer material alongside the older stuff he's been playing for years. Opening the night are Victor Krummenacher and Casey Neill, who'll start things off with an acoustic duo set.
If you're not familiar with the name, Alvin is a Grammy-winning songwriter, singer, producer, and self-described barroom guitarist, widely considered one of the pioneers of Americana. He's a fourth-generation Californian from Downey who grew up on late-night border radio and watching his older cousins play guitar and banjo, and on sneaking into bars like the Ash Grove with his brother Phil to see blues heroes live. The two formed the influential roots rock and R&B band The Blasters in 1979, and Alvin launched a critically acclaimed solo career after leaving the group in 1986. His writing draws on blues, folk, rockabilly, Bakersfield country, surf, and garage rock, with lyrical inspiration from writers like Raymond Chandler and John Steinbeck. His songs have been covered by Los Lobos, Dwight Yoakam, and Nanci Griffith, and he's recorded with Tom Waits and John Mellencamp. In 2024, the Americana Music Association honored him with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
