Grand opening celebration of the new home for the Jordan Schnitzer School of Art at Portland State University, featuring opening remarks, ribbon cutting, and activities including performances, music and exhibitions.
Portland State University is opening the doors to its new art building on Tuesday, October 13, and the whole evening is set up as a building-wide open house. The building at 1981 SW Broadway is the new home for the Jordan Schnitzer School of Art + Art History + Design, and the celebration marks the school's first academic year in the space. It's a four-story building, and the night is designed to let you wander through all of it.
The evening starts with opening remarks from 4:00 to 4:45 PM, followed by a ribbon cutting at 4:45 PM. After that, the building opens up for the rest of the night, with activities, making, performances, printing, music and exhibitions running across the floors until 8:00 PM. Since it's an open house, you can come for the formal start or just drop in later and spend a few hours drifting between the different things happening on each level.
It's a good way to see the new space in action rather than just as a finished building. The school is kicking off the academic year here, so you'll be seeing the studios and classrooms as they're actually being used. The mix of making, printing and performances means you'll see people working in the building, not just art hanging on the walls.
