A 4k restoration screening of The Misfits, Marilyn Monroe's last film, in celebration of her centenary.
Plymouth Arts Cinema is screening a 4k restoration of The Misfits on Saturday 11 July, as part of the centenary of Marilyn Monroe's birth. It's her last film, and it's running for 125 minutes, so you'll want to clear a good chunk of the afternoon or evening for it.
On the surface, John Huston's 1961 drama is an off-beat story of broken-hearted cowboys and broken-down marriages, a look at a dying American Dream. But the production itself was just as fraught as the story it tells. Filmed in the searing heat of the Nevada desert, Monroe's marriage to screenwriter Arthur Miller was falling apart, and her mental health was spiralling. It ended up being the last film for both Monroe and her co-star Clark Gable. Miller's script proved poignant and prophetic when one character, shotgun in hand, explained to a crew of horse wranglers gathered on the barren desert: "you'll probably never see this again in history, you know."
It's a heavy cast, too. Alongside Monroe and Gable, you've got Montgomery Clift and Eli Wallach, so it's a bit of a gathering of the old guard of Hollywood. The 4k restoration brings it back to the big screen in a way it was meant to be seen, and since it's Monroe's final role, it carries a weight that's hard to ignore.

Tickets are £9.50 standard, with matinees at £7.50, over 66s at £8.50, and under 25s, students, AUP staff and budget tickets at £5.00. There's also a £5.00 ticket for bringing in baby and family screenings, and Friends get a 10% discount, with Tuesdays coming in at £6.50.
