Rip It Up – Cut And Paste! – Blinded By the Light (12)

Plymouth Arts Cinema is screening Blinded By the Light (12) on Saturday 26 September, as part of a wider run that goes through to Tuesday 29 September. The film is one of the main features in 'Cut and Paste!', the cinema's local strand of the BFI FAN UK-wide season Rip It Up, which looks at youth rebellion, culture and expression on screen across the UK.

'Cut and Paste!' is co-delivered with Fotonow and The Box as part of The Box's BFI-funded 'Reframing the Region' programme. The strand uses film as a starting point to ask what it feels like to be young in the city, and it doesn't stop at the cinema: there are zine workshops and archive exploration mixed in, giving the whole thing a playful, experimental, punk edge. The season is made possible with the support of the BFI Film Audience Network, awarding funds from the National Lottery.

Blinded By the Light fits right into that. It's a story about a teenager in South Wales who discovers the music of Bruce Springsteen and finds his own voice through it, and it sits comfortably alongside the season's focus on youth and finding a way to express yourself when you're stuck in a place that doesn't quite fit. If you're into the zine side of things, the workshops are where you can actually get stuck in and make something yourself rather than just watching.
