A screening of the animated queer comedy Lesbian Space Princess as part of the Plymouth Pride programme.
Lesbian Space Princess is showing at Plymouth Arts Cinema from 10 to 15 July, as part of the city's Plymouth Pride programme. It's an animated comedy and a queer outer space adventure, directed by Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese.
The story follows Princess Saira, the introverted daughter of the flamboyant lesbian Queens of Planet Clitopolis. Her bounty-hunter girlfriend, Kiki, breaks up with her for being too needy and is subsequently kidnapped by the 'Straight White Maliens'—described as the forgotten incels of the future. Saira has to leave the comforts of gay space to deliver a ransom: her royal labrys, the most powerful weapon known to lesbian kind. The only problem is that she doesn't actually have it.
Visually, the film draws from Adventure Time, and the editing takes cues from anime like Revolutionary Girl Utena. It's a candy-coloured, riotous comedy that works its way through themes of self-worth, relationship messiness, and identity, and it's described as a laugh-out-loud adventure that embraces LGBTQIA+ voices. The animation style is quirky, the colour palette vibrant, and the whole thing is built around queer storylines.

Tickets are £9.50 standard, with matinees at £7.50 and over 66s at £8.50. Under 25s, students, AUP staff, and budget tickets are £5.00, and there's a £5.00 ticket for bringing-in-baby and family screenings. The cinema is at Tavistock Place, Plymouth, PL4 8AT.
